Animal Lexicon from A to Z

Event / Workshops

Equipped with Animal Lexicons, Bestiaries, and the classic Larousse Encyclopedias, we go back in time to biology lessons to study the natural world and capture its forms in clay.

“Animal Lexicon from A to Z” is a unique workshop on small ceramic forms inspired by a childhood fascination with biology textbooks and lexicons from the 1980s and 1990s. The first edition took place at the Municipal Workshop in Gliwice.

The workshop aims to introduce participants to the basics of working with clay and hand modeling techniques. Sculpture serves as a pretext for discussion on studying and observing nature as an exercise in mindfulness.

Individual work on a small ceramic form, under the guidance of a facilitator, is interwoven with presentations and discussions of ceramic animal forms in ancient and contemporary art. During the workshop, participants have the opportunity to use visual aids in the form of an extensive collection of photo albums, books, and school textbooks discussing both the anatomy and characteristics of many animal species.

The workshop lasts 3 hours. It is intended for adults and children (under adult supervision).

The completed pieces are bisque-fired and ready for glazing two weeks after the first workshop.

The workshop concept is ready for future editions, to be held in new spaces for open groups and as part of closed team-building events.
